Spring has sprung and now my herbs can, too.

The beautiful weather we've had this last week has set my green thumb to itching and even though there are still a couple of snow flurries in the forecast for the coming week, I decided it would be safe to start my herbs from seeds indoors today. Maybe by the time Old Man Winter has officially gone into hibernation, my herb seedlings will be ready to be transplanted into large pots for our deck.

Because most herbs thrive best in full sun, these will have to be grown in containers on our deck. I selected just a few herbs that my husband and I use a lot in our favorite dishes. We both love the fresh taste of cilantro, so that was an easy pick. I also have several recipes that call for fresh basil, parsley, and oregano. Our closest grocery store doesn't always carry the last three herbs fresh, and if they do have it, it's usually rather pricey. I love the idea of being able to step out the back door and snip off exactly what I need!

I simply used an empty egg carton filled with potting mix and planted a couple of seeds in each slot. Now some regular watering and the sun should do the rest of the work!

Can't wait to arrange these aromatic plants in my pots to liven up our deck and start cooking with fresh, home-grown herbs!
